Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide including 15% of Australians. Symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and a runny nose can significantly impact hay fever sufferer’s quality of life, particularly during allergy season. While antihistamines and nasal sprays are commonly used to manage hay fever there is another treatment that is growing in popularity thanks to the incredible results, and that treatment is known as “Haytox”.
Neuromodulators are very well known by the general public for their anti-wrinkle benefit. However, did you know that these medications were originally used by doctors for a wide range of medical treatments before their cosmetic benefit was discovered? It is therefore no surprise that neuromodulators were trialled on such a common condition like hay fever.
How does Haytox work?
The medication targets nerve endings present in the nasal mucosa. By blocking these nerve receptors from responding to allergy causing stimuli we are able to stop the cause of hay fever and allergy symptoms before they even start rather than managing them. Symptoms targeted with haytox are general hay fever symptoms including sneezing, nasal congestion and runny nose.
What to expect during a treatment:
We administer the medication with the use of an atomiser into each nostril. It is pain and needle free thanks to the fact that the medication is easily absorbed through our thin mucosal lining in the nasal passage, much like a nasal spray. There is no downtime following the treatment.
Longevity:
The treatment will begin to take affect over the next 1-2 weeks and generally lasts from 3-6 months and will vary depending on the individual. For those suffering from severe hay fever or allergies a second treatment at 4 weeks is sometimes required and will be assessed case by case. For those suffering from chronic symptoms, it is safe to get this treatment at the required increments all year round, while those with seasonal hay fever may require just one or 2 treatments each season.
Risks:
This treatment is extremely low risk due to it being non-invasive. Some people experience provoked hay fever symptoms for around 10 minutes following the treatment. The other main risk is the need for retreatment 4 weeks post the first treatment if the first treatment is not effective enough.
Pre Treatment:
Cease any nasal sprays 24 hours prior to treatment, including saline and corticosteroid sprays.
A gentle FESS nasal & sinus wash is recommended 1 hour prior to treatment to aid in medication absorption. These are available at most pharmacies.
Post-Treatment:
You will be kept flat for 10 minutes following treatment to allow time for absorption. No strenuous exercise or blowing of the nose for 4 hours following the treatment. You may continue any anti-allergy medication following the treatment especially in the first 2 weeks while the treatment is taking affect. Ceasing these medications can occur once treatment has taken affect.
Cost:
$299 per treatment.
Thanks to the longevity, along with the ease and comfort during the procedure there is high satisfaction when it comes to Haytox treatments. It is especially popular for those who are not getting adequate relief from other treatments and medications.
